About These Lessons

These lessons were first created and made available in 2000/2001 by Sorita d’Este & David Rankine for www.avalonia.co.uk. With a complete make-over of Avalonia.co.uk in May 2008, these lessons which were very popular with visitors over the years, no-longer had a home on the website. However, instead of dooming them to the archives to be forgotten, Sorita and David decided to make them available here. Maybe they will still be of use to someone.

Please note: That these lessons are not the same as the homestudy courses offered through Avalonia between 2002 – 2007 (Currently closed to new student applications). They were meant as basic introductory level practical guidance for those taking their first steps into exploring the Wiccan Tradition from a solitary perspective. Sorita and David have since published two books on the subject of Wicca. The first ‘Circle of Fire’ looks at the practices and symbolism found in the key practices of the tradition, the latest is ‘WICCA Magickal Beginnings’ which is a careful analysis of the historical antecedants of the practices found in the tradition, showing where things like circle casting, invocations of the guardians of the Watchtowers, Drawing Down the Moon, The Wiccan Rede, Book of Shadows etc come from historically. Those readers interested in finding out more about Sorita & David’s work, as well as their views on magick & spirituality should visit their homepage at http://www.avalonia.co.uk. Please keep in mind that opinions, ideas and practices change with time. Please Note: These lessons were written many years ago, as such it might be that the authors may have changed their own views on some of the ideas expressed therein, likewise that they may have discovered new information as part of their research over the years, which may have lead to a re-evaluation of personal opinion in some instances.

The Lessons

The lessons each contain some information (sometimes with links to other articles on this website for “further reading”) followed by exercises. Through the course you will be required to keep your own magickal diary and you will be encouraged to do practical workings, culminating in a ritual to the Four Elements. Please note: This course is not the same as the Homestudy Courses offered through this site. The Avalonia Free Wicca Lessons were first written in 2000 and made available through a small mailinglist [GEMS – Goddess Earth Mystery Society] to students who wished to learn more about Wiccan practices, we first made it available here on avalonia.co.uk in 2001 for everyone to use.

No tools are necessary for the completion of these lessons, although you will need the following:

– Some candles
– Incense or Joss
– Small Bowls (to put earth, water and salt in)
– Other objects which you will gather from woodlands / forests or your garden.
– A Notebook (pref. hardback A5 or A4 size) and pen.

If you have ritual tools, such as a wand, athame, pentacle, chalice etc you can of course use them in your work too. Please see What is a Book of Shadows and How to Create & Consecrate your own Book of Shadows in the Avalonia Book of Shadows section for ideas on how to keep your notebook or magickal diary throughout this course. You are welcome to print the lessons and exercises for your own personal use (solitary or with friends) only.

Unfortunately due to an increase in workload and changes in personal circumstances, Sorita and David are not currently accepting new students on the homestudy course. They will however be publishing the material (in a revised format suitable for solitary use) as a book in August 2008 – it will be called “TOWARDS THE WICCAN CIRCLE” and will be available from http://www.avaloniabooks.co.uk

You may also be interested in some of their other books, including CIRCLE OF FIRE and TOWARDS THE WICCAN CIRCLE.

Additionally, they always welcome emails from their readers and are usually happy to answer questions, provide advice or pointers. Contact details can be found on their respective websites:
